Committee for Economic Development

The Committee for Economic Development of The Conference Board is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, business-led public policy organization that delivers well-researched analysis and reasoned solutions to our nation’s most critical issues.

Why We Invested

Creating significant change in the campaign finance field requires an expanded and more diverse range of voices calling for reform. Building on a long history of building a business case for reform, the Committee for Economic Development (CED) conducted business leader focus groups and a national survey in 2012 to deepen understanding of the business community’s perspectives on money in politics. The survey and resulting report, Hiding in Plain Sight: The Problem of Transparency in Political Finance reflect a high degree of dissatisfaction with the campaign finance system among business leaders. The data also show preferences for a wide range of solutions among business leaders.

Currently, CED is working in target states to build consensus among state business leaders by identifying, engaging, and supporting local business leaders who care about money in politics. CED will help interested leaders connect with other likeminded leaders to share ideas and messages as well as relevant research and other materials.
