Free Press

Free Press is one of the strongest advocates for local journalism ecosystems, the open internet, limits on media consolidation, and reducing deception in media in the United States. Free Press aims to improve journalistic practices by supporting a more active and engaged local media community to continue pushing for a healthier news ecosystem.

Why We Invested

Free Press’ core journalism program is working to develop, pilot, and refine an approach that ties together credible and rigorous analysis of local media ecosystems with public engagement to aid communities in engaging and advocating for improvements to the coverage that local news media organizations provide. By engaging communities, newsrooms, and political figures, Free Press is demonstrating how an intentional organizing strategy can yield real and positive changes in journalistic practices and coverage. The program’s ultimate goal is to ensure that positive changes in local journalistic practices and coverage become permanent through the support of an engaged and invested community of media consumers.
