WHY WE INVESTED
A government by the people is at the core of American democracy. Yet, direct rule by a majority at the behest of a populist leader can challenge the integrity of democratic systems. Institutions designed to mediate the will of the people may be less effective, while populism appears to offer answers to current maladies.
With the help of our grant, the Cato Institute’s Prospects for Liberal Democracy will aim to discuss the future of liberal democracy (a form of government in which a representative democracy operates under the principles of a constitution) in the United States with featured activists, academics, and political leaders across the spectrum. This effort will create a broad-based effort to defend, improve, and reform liberal institutions, and mitigate the growing threat of populism by responsiveness to the ever changing political climate.
