WHY WE INVESTED
The role of new outlets in local and state level communities continues to be an important factor in determining and encouraging civic participation. The Center for Investigative Reporting works to develop strategies to support a vibrant and healthy democracy by creating pathways for the public to engage with accountability journalism and to showcase local work nationally. Our 2017 grant to the Center, in partnership with First Look Media, will provide general operating funds to expand watchdog reporting and strengthen the ability to hold institutions accountable to the people they serve. This grant is a part of a collaboration between Democracy Fund and First Look Media to support the role of a robust, free press in our democracy. Read more about this collaboration here.
We also believe that the expanded use of the Center for Investigative Reporting’s Impact Tracker, supported with our 2016 grant, will improve how news outlets monitor their role in their community. Our 2016 grant supports a budding partnership with local outlets in Chicago and a set of opportunities to promote diversity within the ranks of investigative reporters through the Maynard Research Fellowships.
