Democracy Fund

Chalkbeat, Inc., a nonprofit news outlet committed to covering the effort to improve schools for all children, especially those who have historically lacked access to a quality education, presents a model for collaboration as a core infrastructure for the future of sustainable local news that implements engagement and sustainability practices while consolidating backshop operations.

Democracy Fund is pleased to support Chalkbeat’s efforts at building stronger local news and information ecosystems across the country. Chalkbeat’s national-local hub model is one that embodies the core values behind Democracy Fund’s ecosystem news investments: they are locally-led, collaborative, engaged with communities, and innovative in their approaches to inform communities. They also use their model to provide shared services across geographies, while still respecting local leaders, knowledge, and expertise along with their national efforts.

Chalkbeat seeks to make local regions’ news ecosystems more collaborative and engaged with their communities. To date, Chalkbeat bureaus are in seven locations: Chicago, Colorado, Detroit, Indiana, Newark, New York, and Tennessee.
