Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice: Lawyers for Reporters

The Vance Center, part of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York Fund, advances global justice by engaging lawyers across borders to support civil society and an ethically active legal profession.

Why We Invested

The Vance Center for International Justice is developing Lawyers for Reporters, a nonprofit law firm that will provide pro bono legal services to nonprofit and local news reporting organizations throughout the United States. The goal of Lawyers for Reporters is ensuring that no journalists needing legal support will be turned down because of financial constraints.

Lawyers for Reporters will not only address first amendment and media access issues, but also address important organizational legal issues for an industry in transition, such as corporate law, employment law, and legal issues around IRS nonprofit rulings.

Democracy Fund is proud to support this planning grant which will allow the Cyrus Vance Center for International Justice to explore replicating their model with a focus on supporting the needs of the domestic press in the United States.
