Why We Invested
Data for Black Lives (D4BL) works with grassroots organizations around the country to support advocacy and research efforts that challenge discriminatory social media policies. Their Policy Working Group program uses the collective expertise of researchers, activists, policy experts, journalists, and directly-impacted people on the front lines of algorithmic discrimination to advocate for a bold, pro-active policy agenda, while providing a series of resource toolkits that will offer alternative pathways to governance, culture, and ethics.
Currently, D4BL is planning a convening that will result in a project plan to produce the tools for big tech to give Black researchers, data scientists, and Black communities access to their data. This will allow engagement in the design of a model framework for building one of the first public data trusts in the nation.
