Why We Invested
Democracy Fund supported Facing History and Ourselves as part of the 2019 Lippman Kanfer Prize for Applied Jewish Wisdom, which this year was co-sponsored by Democracy Fund and focused on increasing civic engagement and strengthening democracy. After undergoing a rigorous judging process administered by the Lippman Kanfer Foundation for Living Torah, Facing History and Ourselves was selected to receive one of three $30,000 prizes for established programs.
Facing History and Ourselves fosters empathy and reflection, improves students’ academic performance, reinvigorates teachers, and builds safe and inclusive schools. By integrating the study of history, literature, and human behavior with ethical decision making and innovative teaching strategies, their program enables secondary school teachers to promote students’ historical understanding, critical thinking, and social-emotional learning.
