Muckrock Foundation

MuckRock Foundation is a non-profit, collaborative news site that brings together journalists, academics, activists, and regular citizens to request, analyze, and share government documents in an attempt to make politics more transparent and democracies more informed.

The Freedom of Information Act and state public records laws are powerful tools for transparency, government accountability, and civic participation, but using these laws can often be a challenging process for veteran requesters and first-time filers alike. While public records are all property of the people, it’s often hard to engage the public and convey the importance of these laws to a participatory democracy.

MuckRock provides software, editorial content, live events, and other services to help make requesting the proper documents much easier, more collaborative, and more effective. The software will be able to guide veteran and novice requesters through the process and make it easy to quickly to see the current status of all the requests, browse through tens of thousands of other public requests filed by other users, and look up detailed information on how responsive a given agency or jurisdiction historically has been.
