WHY WE INVESTED
The North Carolina Local News Lab Fund will invest in ideas, people, and organizations that are working to ensure people have access to the news and information they need in North Carolina. The fund will focus on building more healthy news ecosystems as a vital part of just communities and a healthy democracy.Through this fund, we will work closely with local partners to increase giving to local news and invest in long-term solutions — over short-term fixes— in the areas of business models, collaboration, and community engagement.
A key goal of the fund is to catalyze new momentum locally around supporting local public-interest news that serves all communities. As such, the fund is built as an open platform for partnership with other funders and donors. We are working closely with local and regional foundations to expand the size of the fund, leveraging even more dollars to support local news and information efforts. The North Carolina Local News Lab Fund is the start of a new multi-year commitment to the state. To learn more about the state, we commissioned local journalist and community organizer Fiona Morgan to undertake a year-long research project on the strengths and challenges of local news and information in North Carolina.
