Democracy Fund

Membership Puzzle Project at NYU

The Membership Puzzle Project at New York University will create a laboratory to study ways community engagement can strengthen investigative reporting and make journalism more sustainable.

Why We Invested

Investigative journalism plays a crucial role in our democracy by holding the powerful accountable and informing the public. The Membership Puzzle Project works with investigative reporting projects and local newsrooms to rebuild the social contract between communities and newsrooms. In partnership with First Look Media, this grant will enable New York University to create an open laboratory to tackle specific problems and develop scalable solutions for developing strong membership programs, and share those lessons with newsrooms across the United States.

This grant is a part of a collaboration between Democracy Fund and First Look Media to support the role of a robust, free press in our democracy. Read more about the collaboration here.
