Why We Invested
We see the Challenge Fund for Journalism Education as an opportunity to hack the news ecosystem, to encourage more collaborative local news coverage, bridge the professor-professional gap, and better educate students who enter the journalism job market each year.
Critically, it provides a chance for universities and colleges to explore becoming anchor institutions in local news ecosystems with the ultimate objective of fostering a customized version of the teaching hospital model in journalism education.
In 2015, ONA has received an American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Power of A Silver Star Award in recognition of the Challenge Fund’s contributions to the local, national, and global communities. High “Mac” Cannon, chair of the Judging Committee, said “Their story exemplifies how associations make a difference every day - not just to the industry or profession they represent, but to society at large”
