Over Zero

Over Zero is a research project of Hopewell Fund established to reduce, prevent, and create long-term societal resilience to violence by working to help societies resist division and strive towards positive, peaceful coexistence.

With the growing prevalence of nativist and xenophobic movements targeting Muslims, refugees, immigrants, and minority groups, Over Zero’s work focus on counteracting dangerous speeches in the United States and Europe to prevent this identity-based violence. Beyond the risk of group-targeted violence, when this type of rhetoric takes root as a foundation of political discourse, good governance becomes increasingly difficult and dangerous speech devolves political debate into fear-mongering and scapegoating, resulting in deep polarization.

With the help of our grant, Over Zero will partner with local actors and interdisciplinary experts to support research, develop new strategies and approaches, and provide training and strategy development support. Ultimately, this work strengthens the impact and capacity of the organizations and individuals working to counteract dangerous speech and prevent violence within their own communities.
