PEN American Center

PEN America Center, a non-profit organization based in New York, works to advance literature, defend free expression, and champion the freedom to write to unite writers and their allies to celebrate creative expression and defend the liberties that make it possible.

PEN America Center has documented the increasing dangers for U.S. press freedom, including the routine denigration of the press and journalists, disregard of democratic norms, elevating hyper-partisan news sources, and obscuring the lines between fact, opinion, and truth. As the trust in news media deteriorates, PEN seeks to study the root causes of this issue in an attempt to shape activities to foster a sustainable and credible movement for press freedom across the nation.

With the help of our grant, PEN America Center will aim to build local constituencies for press freedom by continuing their Press Freedom Incentive Fund. The fund seeks to mobilize their members across the country in locally-designed activities and campaigns which spotlights press freedom concerns. By working in a small, local scale, PEN will be able to analyze these results for a granular understanding of the most effective ways to build support and lay the groundworks for building relationships and providing a foundation for an engaged and sustainable national constituency.
