R Street Institute

The R Street Institute is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, public policy research organization engaging in policy research and outreach that promotes free markets and limited, effective government.

WHY WE INVESTED

Most Members and staff in Congress – by necessity – devote their time to policy, politics, media relations, and re-election campaigns, but spend relatively little time thinking about Congress as an institution. The R Street Institute believes that deliberate conversation on the subject of congressional capacity will encourage policy entrepreneurs on Capitol Hill to strengthen Congress and its oversight of the executive branch.

This general operating support grant will support R Street’s organizational capacity and programs including the Legislative Branch Capacity Working Group (LBCWG). The R Street Institute believes that deliberate conversation on the subject of congressional capacity will encourage policy entrepreneurs on Capitol Hill to strengthen Congress and its oversight of the executive branch. The LBCWG includes experts, reform advocates, and congressional staff and members, and meets regularly to discuss reform ideas, congressional capacity constraints, and oversight issues. This group, jointly convened by R Street and New America, also publishes and promotes research and commentary on congressional reform at LegBranch.com.

Other programs of note include R Street’s collaboration with Demand Progress to operate the Congressional Data Coalition, which aims to upgrade Congress’ technological platform and improve its ability to conduct oversight and provide information to the public. In partnership with Demand Progress, R Street’s tech experts will continue to develop technology to promote government transparency and improve technological capacity in the government. R Street also works to protect the judiciary against attacks on its credibility as a critical check in
