Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press works to protect the right to gather and distribute news, keep government accountable by ensuring access to public records, and to preserve the principles of free speech and unfettered press, as guaranteed by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Why We Invested

American journalists face a more difficult landscape than ever before. Dwindling resources mean reporters often lack access to in-house legal counsel who can advise them. For decades, the Reporter’s Committee for the Freedom of the Press has provided the industry and reporters with pro bono assistance and a collective voice on key legal issues impacting press freedom. This grant will provide general operating supporting to the Reporter’s Committee in order to enhance their ability to support independent journalists and nonprofits news outlets and to strengthen legal support for longtime partners in broadcast, print, and online news media. Furthermore with this support, Reporters Committee will also focus on public outreach and engagement centered around key press freedom issues like subpoenas of journalists for confidential information, blocking access to public records and information, and digital surveillance.
