Santa Clara University: Markkula Center for Applied Ethics

The mission of the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics is to engage individuals and organizations in making choices that respect and care for others. The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University is developing a research agenda and public facing initiatives to translate their research to advance solidarity journalism.

Why We Invested

The Rights and Dignity (RAD) Working Group comprises representatives from The Omidyar Group, Democracy Fund, Humanity United and Luminate, and is committed to addressing conditions and systems of hate through a values-based, collaborative approach. Democracy Fund convenes and supports the working group.

The RAD Working Group recognizes that those working to confront hate and preserve the rights and dignity of vulnerable communities in the United States are facing direct and vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, burnout, and a range of physical and emotional needs. This grant will support further development and dissemination of solidarity journalism practices. It will explore new ways that journalists can increase their civic impact when reporting on and within marginalized communities.
