Democracy Fund

Constitution Project at POGO

The Constitution Project at the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) works to combat the increasingly partisan divide regarding constitutional rights and liberties.

WHY WE INVESTED

The courts are critical to our system of checks and balances, operating as a backstop against abuse and overreach by the other branches of government. Despite their importance in preserving our democratic norms, they have been subject to attacks on their credibility as critical institutions in our democracy. In response to these attacks, The Constitution Project at POGO has launched a project to promote the importance of the judiciary and defend the courts against attacks on their legitimacy. The Democracy Fund’s grant will support the work of The Constitution Project at POGO to safeguard the judicial branch from efforts to delegitimize it by identifying messages that promote the rule of law. This will be accomplished by identifying common themes appealing to diverse stakeholders, communicating the importance of an independent judiciary to the public, and building a diverse coalition that is willing to leverage spheres of influence to protect the judiciary against attack and deter a potential constitutional crisis.
