The Lenfest Institute for Journalism: Community Listening and Engagement Fund (CLEF)

The Lenfest Institute for Journalism is the first-of-its-kind non-profit organization whose sole mission is to develop and support sustainable business models for great local journalism.

Why We Invested

The Community Listening and Engagement Fund (CLEF) is a grant-making initiative created by the Lenfest Institute to help news organizations produce more relevant and trusted coverage for the diverse audiences they serve. ‚ÄčThe fund subsidizes the costs for newsrooms to adopt Hearken and GroundSource, two platforms designed by journalists to bring the public more deeply into the reporting process. CLEF will help newsrooms be more responsive to the needs of their communities by expanding the reach of innovative listening tools in newsrooms of all sizes. Helping newsrooms transform their relationship to their community is central to create more sustainable journalism that serves our democracy.
