Upturn: Discriminatory Targeting Policy

Upturn, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, advances equity and justice in the design, governance, and use of digital technology. Their research and advocacy combine technical fluency and creative policy thinking to confront patterns of inequity, especially those rooted in race and poverty.

Why We Invested

Upturn is conducting research on the topic of discriminatory targeting by social media platform companies. Their work drives policy outcomes and sparks debate through reports, scholarly articles, regulatory comments, direct advocacy efforts together with coalition allies, articles and op-eds, and participation in events including public panels, conferences, and workshops.

Digital platforms have become a major source of news and information for millions of Americans and play a role in the political, social, and economic landscape of our country. Democracy Fund believes that the work of Upturn is vital to ensuring a just and equitable democracy.
