The Wesleyan Media Project tracks and analyzes advertising by federal and gubernatorial candidates in real-time during elections. The goals of the project are to develop a definitive database that tracks all advertising by source (corporation, union, interest group, party, or candidate), and to enhance the ability of scholars, citizens, and journalists to hold government accountable by providing public information on how special interests are attempting to influence American democracy in general and political campaigns in particular.
Why We Invested
The purpose of this grant is to support the Wesleyan Media Project in their effort to think through ethical collection and display of online political ad data and work toward a reliable framework for understanding how platforms shape the digital public square. Wesleyan’s work to bridge the understanding of political communication in the broadcast era with new norms in the digital era will provide important insights on how to best move forward to strengthen the public’s access to information
