Yale University: Crockett Lab

Crockett Lab, located in the the Department of Psychology, Yale University, studies the cognitive building blocks of human morality, including social learning, impression formation, empathy, moral judgment and decision-making. Their approach integrates methods and insights from social psychology, behavioral economics, computational neuroscience and philosophy.

Why We Invested

Dr. Molly Crockett’s work combines psychological theory with cutting-edge computational social science to research potential impacts of social media platforms on democracy. Based on initial evidence that social media amplifies moral outrage, Dr. Crockett’s team will examine potential consequences of ‘digital outrage’ for the spread of mis/disinformation, political polarization, and participation in the public square.

Democracy Fund is proud to support Crockett Lab’s research that can inform stakeholders in media, industry, and government on how to most effectively design and regulate online spaces in a way that limits threats to democracy.
