Understanding the Voter Experience: The Public’s View of Election Administration and Reform

By Natalie Adona and Paul Gronke / Last Updated 2018 October 16th

We know that the public’s trust and confidence in elections provides the basis for a healthy election system and a healthy democracy. Yet there has been little scholarship on public opinion about the elections and voting process in the United States.

In this report, authors Natalie Adona and Paul Gronke examine data from the 2008–2016 Cooperative Congressional Election Study (CCES) and reveal new insight into how the public is thinking about the decision to vote or not, their knowledge and understanding of voter registration requirements, the voting process itself, and their perceptions of election integrity. The report also offers key takeaways and suggestions for future research.
